Giza is a governorate located in central Egypt on the west bank of the Nile. Along with Cairo and El Qalyubeya Governorate, it forms the Greater Cairo area. Covering approximately 27,564 km², Giza is home to around 9 administrative centres, 11 cities, and numerous districts and villages. The governorate is easily accessible by plane, with Cairo and Alexandria airports nearby, making it a popular first stop for visitors to Egypt.
Giza is one of the most visited destinations in Egypt, renowned for its impressive collection of ancient Pharaonic monuments, such as the Sphinx and the tombs of the Royal Family, high-ranking officials, and labourers. Tourists can enjoy Egypt's pleasant weather, ride camels, and engage with the warm and welcoming locals during their visit to the Giza Plateau.
In the modern era, Giza Governorate saw the establishment of Egypt's first university, originally named Fuad I University, which later became Cairo University. Shopping in Giza is a popular activity for tourists looking to take home souvenirs before they leave. The area is home to numerous bazaars selling copper and brass plates with Pharaonic engravings, alabaster statues, and other handmade crafts, though at relatively high prices. For more affordable options, visitors can find similar or even better items in the bazaars of Khan El Khalili and El Darb El Ahmar in Cairo.
